What did the Mayor of Havering do all year?
Cllr Wendy Brice-Thompson provided a very interesting talk on Saturday night about her year as the Mayor of Havering 2006/2007.
The event was well attended with over 20 people there to find out more and ask questions.
We were taken through an interesting collection of photographs that she took during her term and found out more in relation to Habbit Shed, her charity for the year.
The scrap book that she has been presented with for the first half of her term is almost 30cms thick! The scrap book for the second half of her term is being finalised now and sounds as if it is going to be just as big!

Mayoral Q&A - The Conclusion
Last night the much anticipated question and answer session with the potential Conservative candidates for London Mayor took place. The evening saw a wide range of candidates, all with different experiences and ideas to offer the role.

Dagenham & Rainham Open Primary
The Dagenham & Rainham Open Primary is on 20 April.
Interviews were conducted yesterday at the Dagenham & Rainham Club and the four candidates short listed to contest this Open Primary are Simon Jones, Jane Archer, Claire Palmer and Paul Bristow.
If you are aged 18 or over, and live within the Constituency, ie you're on the electoral roll for one of these wards:
Chadwell Heath, Eastbrook, Heath, River, Whalebone, Village, Elm Park, Rainham & Wennington or South Hornchurch you can register to take part.
To register you can email dandrconservatives@tiscali.co.uk, or call 07902 225550, the deadline for registration is 19 April.
It is being held at Dagenham Parish Church Hall, Church Lane, Dagenham, RM10 9UL, doors open at 7pm for 7:30pm start.

Spring Conference - Nottingham Part II
Today's highlight was obviously David Cameron's speech which concentrated on the future of the NHS. He staked the Tory's claim to be the party of the NHS, pledging to end the targets he says are destroying the service. He said government targets had turned the NHS into a "vast inhuman machine" and that only the Tories could restore staff morale and improve patient care. This view was supported by a number of speeches from doctors and nurses about how bureaucracy and reorganisation have hamstrung the NHS.

However, having celebrated St Patrick's Day in style last night (where David 'WMD' Grantham lived up to his considerable reputation), it was necessary for us to catch up on some sleep this afternoon. But we are looking forward to this evening's night out, when GK and Gareth (Both Nottigham University Graduates) are taking us to some of their old haunts for a few end of conference drinks and a well deserved curry.

Spring Conference - Nottingham Part I
Having had to two superb visits to the annual conference in Blackpool and Bournemouth, expectations were high for Havering CF's first visit to the Spring Conference in Nottingham. And we were not disappointed, with excellent speeches from shadow cabinet titans, George Osborne and William Hague. There was also video clips of David Cameron on the doctors march and David Davis in New York looking at the zero tolerance crime initiative - "Broken Windows".
The day ended with a very good session concerning local campaigning and social action ideas from other areas of the country lead by Eric Pickles MP. Havering CF will be bringing back these suggestions and will try to implement those that are applicable to our area.
GK's Quote of the Day: GT to SM whilst parking the car - "Is it in yet?" (you probably had to be there - So make sure you are in Blackpool later this year!)

Q&A Session - update

Association Chairman's Meeting @ CCHQ
Gary Murphy (in his role as Hornchurch & Upminster deputy chairman) attended the regular meeting for London constituency chairman at Conservative Campaign Headquarters or CCHQ. The meeting started with a presentation on Campaign strategy for 2007 from the George Bridges, the Campaigns Director. This presentation gave a great insight, explaining past decisions and future ideas.

This was followed by an update on the issues surrounding the Greater London Assembly (GLA) such as the process for selecting Mayoral and GLA candidates. The update included contributions from Francis Maude MP, Angie Bray AM and Ian Sanderson (London regional director).

It is usual for these meetings to end with an example of best practice from the region. This time it was the turn of Islington Conservative Association who outlined the benefits of merging the two previous associations (North and South). This decision has allowed them to pool resources and fight campaigns more effectively.

HCF @ Any Questions?
Havering CF members attended the recording of Radio 4's 'Any Questions?' at Campion School, Hornchurch, on Friday 12th January. The panel included Dominic Grieve MP (con), Tony McNaulty MP (lab), Norman Lamb MP (lib dem) and Caroline Lucas MEP (green).
The panel discussed a wide range of topics from special needs education to the future purpose of the British armed forces. However, the most interesting and heated debate came over the latest crisis at the Home Office were Mr McNaulty is a junior minister. Jonathan Dimbleby (chairman of the programme) expertly grilled him over the crime file rows.

This was a very enjoyable evening and the HCF committee will be keeping their eyes peeled for future poltical radio and television programmes being recorded near Havering.
