Havering Conservative Futures 8th Presidents Dinner was a resounding success last night. The Coach House Hotel once again proved to be the place to be.

The evening started off with a few drinks in the garden and the bar, followed by a 3 course meal, a raffle (half of the money raised went to Help the Aged, the Mayor of Havering's chosen charity), a small speech by myself, a speech by James Brokenshire MP and finally more drinks and a disco with some good, and some bad dancing.

Quote of the evening (if there are any more, I am sure the Committee will pop them up here...)
"Isn't GK clumsy?" - by the London North East Chairman who had just managed to fall off the ramp into the Garden and twist his ankle!

Personally, I'd like to thank all of the HCF Committee who helped to organise the event and to everyone who attended for making it such a memorable evening! I hope no one is suffering nightmares from some of the bad dancing witnessed on the dance floor!

Squirrels Heath By-election - Cllr Lynden Thorpe

Lynden Anne Thorpe, the Conservative Party Candidate at this by-election, was elected.

Our Congratulations go to Lynden!

Lynden now makes up the three Councillors of this Ward with Cllr Eric Alec Munday and Council Leader Michael John White.

Following the passing of Cllr Eddie Cahill a By-election for Squirrels Heath ward was held on Thursday 23 August 2007.

Persons who stood nominated for election as a Councillor for the Squirrels Heath Ward were:

"We are pleased to announce that we will be launching the Bluelist political online system on the 12th September 2007. This web based system has taken a year to develop and we are confident that we will be delivering something of real value to our Bluelisters and candidates. We will be marking the event with a reception at the National Liberal Club. We hope that many of you are able to join us to mark the occasion. Below are the details of the event:

Upminster

Angela Watkinson MP has been kind enough to put together an entry for our blogspot in relation to Upminster....

"One of the things I like about Upminster is that it doesn’t change much – we like it the way it is. Certainly there have been changes since I first moved to Upminster town in 1965 – it still retained its village feel, with lots of individual shops who would accept a cheque without identification, because the shopkeepers knew most of their customers. We had a little cinema, where Somerfield is now, and primary aged children could walk to school unescorted. (Can you hear the Hovis tune?)

Change over the last 6 years is harder to define. People eat out much more these days, so the balance between restaurants and retail shops has changed. Our much loved land mark, Upminster windmill, has suffered storm damage but happily, repairs are already in hand. When restoration is complete, there will also be a visitors’ centre for schools. Local residents complain increasingly about anti social behaviour and PCSOs now assist the police in gathering information. We are all worried about further hospital closures but Upminster constituency continues to be a desirable place to live, with good schools and transport links to London which maintain the high house prices. Unlike most London constituencies, we are 50% Green Belt including some farms. Havering used to be called the Town and Country Borough and I think that describes it very well.

Upminster constituency used to be a series of villages which have gradually joined together over the years. My vision for the future is to upgrade the parts that need it whilst retaining their individual local character. Our churches, voluntary organisations and sports clubs are all well supported – it is simply a great place to live."

London North East AGM

This week I attended the London North East Area AGM. There were no uncontested nominations for the posts. Cllr Peter Golds was duly elected as Chairman for the forthcoming year. The other members of the LNE Executive are Matt Davis, Graham Postles, John Moss and Gareth Thompson.

We were briefed on the forthcoming Conservative Candidate for Mayor selections and the timetable that this will run to. This has already been published on Conservativehome, so I will not list it out in full.

We were also briefed on the forthcoming GLA elections due in 2008. Our Assembly Member, Cllr Roger Evans AM is restanding as our candidate for Havering and Redbridge and we look forward to being involved in the campaign over the next year.

There is also a DVD which has been produced by central office which provides lots of information regarding campaigning and interesting topics. Havering CF will soon be in possession of a copy and if you are interested in viewing it, please contact me (chairman@haveringconservativefuture.com).

Cllr Wendy Brice-Thompson provided a very interesting talk on Saturday night about her year as the Mayor of Havering 2006/2007.

The event was well attended with over 20 people there to find out more and ask questions.

We were taken through an interesting collection of photographs that she took during her term and found out more in relation to Habbit Shed, her charity for the year.

The scrap book that she has been presented with for the first half of her term is almost 30cms thick! The scrap book for the second half of her term is being finalised now and sounds as if it is going to be just as big!

Cllr Wendy Brice-Thompson, the current Mayor of Havering for 2006/2007 has kindly agreed to do a talk on her year in office. This is a brilliant opportunity to find out more about what the Mayor does, what type of events they get invited to, and find out what goes on behind the scenes!

You will be able to ask questions about any of the events she attended, her favourites, and of course, those she may wish to forget!

The Hornchurch & Upminster Conservatives held their Carribean theme night at Western Road last night. Over 40 people enjoyed a variety of different dishes including curried goat, jerk chicken, saltfish and pan-fried plantain. This fantastic assortment of food was washed down with a few glasses of highly-alcholic Jamaican Rum Punch.

Our next social event is a trip to the Hoop Beer Festival in Stock on Saturday 2nd June 2007. If you would like to attend contact GK Adams at events@haveringconservativefuture.com. Please let us know as soon as possible so that we can arranged transport to and from the festival for everyone.

Campaigning in Chadwell Heath

Today some of us met up with a group in Chadwell Heath to help start the deliveries for Simon Jones. There were about 14 of us in total, Cllrs David Grantham and Roger Evans AM were out and some people travelled in from across London.

Simon is already planning another leaflet and canvassing in a different Ward under the new Constituency, this time in one of the wards that falls into Havering. Dagenham and Rainham Selection

Last night the Dagenham and Rainham Open Primary took place.

Congratulations goes to Simon Jones who was voted in as the new Conservative Candidate to stand against Jon Cruddas at the next election that gets called.

Havering Conservative Future look forward to working with Simon and hope that the other three candidates find seats.

I was lucky enough to help with the CV sift and interviews to put the four candidates through to the Open Primary. All four were very strong candidates that once selected, will give current non-conservative MP's a run for their seats.

The Dagenham & Rainham Open Primary is on 20 April.

Interviews were conducted yesterday at the Dagenham & Rainham Club and the four candidates short listed to contest this Open Primary are Simon Jones, Jane Archer, Claire Palmer and Paul Bristow.

If you are aged 18 or over, and live within the Constituency, ie you're on the electoral roll for one of these wards:
Chadwell Heath, Eastbrook, Heath, River, Whalebone, Village, Elm Park, Rainham & Wennington or South Hornchurch you can register to take part.

Britain should consider making the legal drinking age 21 as it has "lost the plot" when it comes to regulating alcohol, policy pundits claim. The UK has one of the worst problems in Europe with a fifth of children aged 11 to 15 drinking at least once a week. Public Policy Research (PPR), the journal of the IPPR think-tank, says it is time to practise "tough love", such as reviewing the minimum drinking age. However, other commentators are that this proposal is unenforceable and that we should simply apply the current rule more effectively. What do you think?

Leafleting in St Andrews Finished

Tonight saw us finish the campaigning in the St Andrews ward, delivering the Council Tax leaflet that we have been doing for the past two weeks. It has been a fantastic effort to finish the entire ward in such a short amount of time.

Last night saw a classic Havering Conservative Future drink-up at the Cittie of Yorke pub of High Holborn, London. It was particularly pleasing to see members from other branches across London, such as Islington, Enfield North and Poplar & Limehouse.

More Leafleting in St Andrews

Tonight saw more campaigning in the St Andrews ward, delivering the Council Tax leaflet from last week. This time we concentrated on the part of the ward close to Elm Park. Despite only lasting for about an hour and a quarter we managed to deliver more than expected and should be able to finish our last task over the weekend. We will be announcing the time and date of the next campaign day shortly, so please keep checking this blog.

The evening was rounded off in the traditional way, with a few drinks in the Chequers pub in Hornchurch.

Another Free Bowlarama!

Last night, HCF went for some free Bowling at Number Ten in the Brewery. As there were some 'difficulties' last time which resulted in a one game, 4.5 hour spectacular, this round was on them. However, we were asked to move lanes mid-game and as a result scored another voucher for 10 free games with minimal inconvenience - result!

The evening was great success, after Bowling we headed on down to the Moon and Stars and then into 131 for some 'quality' disco dancing. This morning the Committee met to discuss upcoming Social Events and we'll be publishing the list soon (including the next free Bowlarama!)

Leafleting in St Andrews

Tonight saw some a quickly arranged campaign night in the St Andrews ward. The leaflet concerned the Havering Conservative administration's excellent record on delivering steady council tax increases, whilst improving services. This leaflet was the first to go out under the new Hornchurch & Upminster Conservatives banner.

The evening was rounded off in the usual way, with a few drinks in the Chequers pub in Hornchurch and watching the England match.

Romford Town Quiz Night

The Romford Town ward held a quiz night yesterday and Havering CF entered a team. Although we didn’t win, despite our very Gareth Thompson acting as chief scorer, we did well to achieve a respectable third place. This was particular well earned in light of the particularly tricky questions (set by local councillors Wendy and Fred Thompson), which contained rounds on subjects as diverse as ‘Sixties Music’ and ‘Herbs’.

Havering CF Chairman Sarah Mackintosh acted as quizmaster for the evening and her numerous mispronunciations of the questions provided lots of material for heckles and banter directed towards her from the HCF table.

Angela Watkinson MP selected for Hornchurch & Upminster

This morning saw the selection of the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the new Hornchurch and Upminster constituency. The seat was contested by Angela Watkinson MP (Upminster) and James Brokenshire MP (Hornchurch), both excellent Members of Parliament who contribute a great deal to their local communities and the Conservative Party in Parliament.

There was a vote of over 100 members at the selection meeting which saw each candidate speak for 10 minutes and then answer questions for a further 15 minutes. I am delighted to be able to announce that Angela won the vote and has been duly named as the PPC for the Hornchurch and Upminster Constituency.

The contest was robust and dignified and I would like to extend my personal congratualtions to Angela and my best wishes to James who I have no doubt will find another seat in the very near future.

Spring Conference - Nottingham Part II

Today's highlight was obviously David Cameron's speech which concentrated on the future of the NHS. He staked the Tory's claim to be the party of the NHS, pledging to end the targets he says are destroying the service. He said government targets had turned the NHS into a "vast inhuman machine" and that only the Tories could restore staff morale and improve patient care. This view was supported by a number of speeches from doctors and nurses about how bureaucracy and reorganisation have hamstrung the NHS.

However, having celebrated St Patrick's Day in style last night (where David 'WMD' Grantham lived up to his considerable reputation), it was necessary for us to catch up on some sleep this afternoon. But we are looking forward to this evening's night out, when GK and Gareth (Both Nottigham University Graduates) are taking us to some of their old haunts for a few end of conference drinks and a well deserved curry.

Spring Conference - Nottingham Part I

Having had to two superb visits to the annual conference in Blackpool and Bournemouth, expectations were high for Havering CF's first visit to the Spring Conference in Nottingham. And we were not disappointed, with excellent speeches from shadow cabinet titans, George Osborne and William Hague. There was also video clips of David Cameron on the doctors march and David Davis in New York looking at the zero tolerance crime initiative - "Broken Windows".

The day ended with a very good session concerning local campaigning and social action ideas from other areas of the country lead by Eric Pickles MP. Havering CF will be bringing back these suggestions and will try to implement those that are applicable to our area.

Busy month

We may not have updated the blog too much this month, but in the background we have been very busy.

We have some campaigning days coming up both in Havering and just over the border in the new Rainham & Dagenham Consitituency over the next month. If you are able to help out on any Saturday mornings, please contact us and let us know your availability and we will let you know where we are on that Saturday.

A group of us are off tonight to Nottingham for the Spring Conference. We will update you with regards to the events of the weekend when we return early next week.

There is a quiz night next Saturday (24th) being hosted by Romford Town Ward. It seems spaces are very limited now, so please contact me if you wish to attend at chairman@haveringconservativefuture.com.

The boundary changes in Havering that prompted the Hornchurch Constituency to disappear and be merged into three others means that Rainham and Dagenham needs to find itself a new conservative candidate. After a meeting I attended last night, it seems the timetable for this has now been set and further details will be provided as soon as I have confirmation of them.

With regards to the other two Consitituencies that we cover, Andrew Rosindell MP has already been reselected by the Romford Conservative Association in preparation for the next General Election and the new Hornchurch & Upminster Constituency has it's selection meeting on 24 March.

Finally, for those of you in Rainham and Dagenham, please check out James Brokenshire MP's campaign re: Stop Rainham Jail (http://www.stoprainhamjail.com/). There was a public meeting on Friday 9 March which "was extremely positive and helped to demonstrate the strength of local opposition to any prison plan for Rainham." According to the website, the next event is an awareness and petition signing session outside of the Tesco Extra in Rainham on Saturday 17 March commencing at 10am. If you live in this area, and haven't yet signed the petition, please go and sign up either at Tesco's or online!

Roger Evans Reselected

Last night Councillor Roger Evans AM was reselected as the Conservative Candidate for the London Assembly seat of Havering and Rebridge. Roger made a success appeal to a meeting of representatives from each of the Conservative Associations in the seat held and the offices of the Ilford North Conservatives in Gants Hill.

Roger was first elected to the London Assembly in 2000 and has done excellent job in holding Mayor Livingstone to account, especially on issues concerning transport and the enviroment. In his role as one of our vice presidents, Roger has been a strong supporter of Havering Conservative Future (he has agreed to chair our mayoral candidates hustings on 20th April). We wish him good luck and look forward to supporting him on the campaign trail.

Monday Poll - Question 7

We learnt that the settled view of the House of Commons on Lords reform is, not to put too fine a point on it, unsettled. MPs voted for an 80 per cent elected Upper House, 20 per cent appointed. A few minutes later, they voted for a 100 per cent elected House, nil appointed. It's not the debacle of the last vote, in 2003, when all the options for a hybrid chamber were defeated. But it hardly sets a clear direction either.

For this reason we are asking for your opinion of what should happen to the House of Lords. Do you think that we should continue with a fully appointed second house which allows for people of great experience (such as nobel prize winners), who would not otherwise consider running for public office, to contribute to the political life of the nation.

However you may believe that the only way for the upper chamber to gain legitimacy is through the ballot box and therefore favour a fully elected house. But you could feel that we already have enough elected politicians and not wish to create just another clone of the House of Commons.

Or do you feel that there is a compromise between these two positions and favour a hybrid system with some elected and some appointed members, therefore having democratic legitimacy as well as accomadating non-political experts. However you may fear that this could lead to a two different classes of Peer within the chamber. Have your say here:

Boris Johnson Dinner

Last night Angela Watkinson's Parliamentary Dining Club hosted a dinner at the Palms hotel, Harold Wood. The room was packed to the rafters with over 150 people in attendance (of which a large number were CF members). The great interest was no doubt inspired by the guest speaker, Boris Johnson MP.

An excellent meal was followed by Mr Johnson's after dinner speech and to his credit he managed to compete with the sounds from the disco in the adjacent room. As people have come to expect, he was highly entertaining speaker, even if the oratory was not as well-polished as some other politicians. The main thread of his speech was the need for less government interference in day to day lives of ordinary people.

However, the other highlight of the evening (from a HCF point of view) was when GK delivered grace before the meal and to the amused of the guests showed Mr Johnson that he was not the only conservative who gets muddled up when public speaking!

Avenue Q is not the most upmarket of New York streets, and is about as far away from Park Avenue as you can get, but it is home to some lively and off the wall characters performed by an unholy comedic alliance of humans and puppets!

Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate, has just moved to this neighbourhood as he desperately tries to follow his dreams and discover his ever-elusive purpose in life. A tiny bank balance, the distraction of a busty blonde and a variety of weird and wonderful friends and neighbours lead Princeton on a hilarious journey of self-discovery.

HCF are off to see this teriffic muscial in London on the 21st April and we've scored a fantastic deal! £30 for dinner nearby (La Tasca) and balcony seats at the show - what a steal!

It was annouced that Prince Harry would be joining his regiment in Iraq later this year. But will having the person third in line to the throne in a combat zone be a help or a hinderance?

Some argue that he knew what the job involved when he signed up to serve and that he should be treated like any other soldier. Ilford North CF is Inaugurated

On Friday, young members of the Conservative Party in Ilford North formed a new Conservative Future branch. This is the result of a sustained effort from London North East CF Area Chairman Gareth Thompson who has worked closely with the Ilford North executive, Lee Scott MP and the young members of the party.

The Havering Conservative Future committee has already offered advice and support during the development stage and will continue to assist this fledgling branch in anyway we can. In the meantime, we would like to congratulate Samia and her new committee and wish them good luck for the future!

Comedy Night a Fantastic Success

Last Friday, HCF members went to Lee Hurst's backyard comedy club. The tickets were a steal at half-price and the night was nothing short of hilarious!

The former 'They Think It's All Over' presenter compered between the three acts, all of which, with their own style brought the house down. This was helped of course with the odd plastic jug of Carling served up in the intervals!

Comedy is something we definitely want to do more of, particularly with the brilliant time we had seeing Jimmy Carr and Little Britain Live late last year. If you know of any places we could try, please get in touch!

Bowlarama

Last night's event followed in the long tradition of HCF Bowlaramas and was a great success! This despite the staff of the bowling alley losing our lane reservation so that we did not start playing until 9.30pm. However using the HCF spirit we turn this into a positive and continued to have a good time in the bar (after all alcohol is one of life's great levellers).

It was also good to see a couple of new faces at this event!

The poll in relation to what events should we run has now closed. To update, the Committee has already started putting dates and plans in place to support what you voted for.

Political events - very soon we will start publicising a Conservative London Mayoral Candidate question and answer session. It is going to be held in Romford, and the date for your diary is 20 April. Further details will be announced shortly, but we have secured the services of Roger Evans AM to be our Chairperson for the evening and we have 6 of the Nominees agreeing to attend so far!

Curry nights - I am sure GK has a date in mind in the near future for this and confirmation will be through soon.

Local drinks - no date for this has yet been set, but there will be plenty of drinking going on at Bowlarama on Saturday...

Speaker events - not much interest for this one, but for those that voted for it, I hope the Mayoral Q&A session that we have arranged will be an event you will attend as it is the perfect opportunity for you to ask the candidates questions and find out why they want you to vote for them!

Dinners - the Annual Presidents dinner is booked for 7 September. We have secured the Coach House again as our venue and we hope it will be a sell out. Further details will be released nearer the time.

Quiz nights - we will continue to support the Wards and Associations that run these. the next that we are aware of is the Romford Town Quiz night, 24 March @ 85 Western Road. Please email events@haveringconservativefuture.com if you wish to join the HCF team that we will be putting in!

Visits - a few suggestions have been thrown in such as Duxford in May for an Airshow.....we will look into further suitable venues like the Secret Nuclear Bunker and post details here.

Mark Clarke Selected for Tooting

Last night Mark Clarke (CF National Chairman) was selected as the Conservative candidate for the Tooting Seat at the next General Election. Although it currently has a Labour majority of over 5,000 we are confident that with a hard-working candidate like Mark the Conservatives can give them a run for their money.

In his role as CF National Chairman, Mark has been a valuable supporter of Havering Conservative Future. He always on hand to offer advice and has attended our social events, such as the last President's Dinner and the Christmas Meal.

Today's topical poll is based around the online petition that people are signing up to. Douglas Alexander, the transport secretary has pledged to listen to opponents of the introduction of UK road charging.

More than one million people have signed an online petition against plans to introduce road charging in the UK.

The petition, which is the most popular on the Downing Street website, calls for the scrapping of "planned vehicle tracking and road pricing policy".

Yesterday's HCF trip to Twickenham to see England's opening game of the 6 Nations Tournament was nothing less than fantastic! The day began with a relatively early start (for a Saturday morning!) and a journey down to Richmond in South West London. There, many a burger and pint were enjoyed as we sat back to watch France v Italy on the big screens. A couple of hours later, we were crammed into a train and on our way to the Stadium!

After some hearty renditions of Swing Lo and God Save the Queen, the game began. England's performance was simply brilliant with a special mention going to England hero, Jonny Wilkinson. With the final score 42-20, England hoisted the Calcutta Cup and off we went, back to Central London. The day concluded with a very tasty Curry and several more lemonades in Brick Lane!

Mayor of Haverings Charity Dinner - Update

I have picked a few of the best photos out. The evening was a great success as we raised over the £1,000 target...the final total was just over £1,100!

The Result: A close result - 54% opposed the Catholic adoption agencies opting of discrimination laws and 46% supporting their right to opt out on a matter of conscience.

Mayor of Havering's Charity Dinner

The event was held last night at Romford Golf club, with approx 80 guests attending. The event was well supported by HCF, the 3 Havering MP's, numerous Mayors and Consorts from the surrounding areas and many Havering Councillors.

Some more photos and an update as to how much was raised will be posted here shortly, but current money raised is in the region of £1,000. The proceeds of this event will be going to Habit Shed, a local charity which provides theatre opportunities to children from both 'mainstream' and 'special' areas of the community.

Association Chairman's Meeting @ CCHQ

Gary Murphy (in his role as Hornchurch & Upminster deputy chairman) attended the regular meeting for London constituency chairman at Conservative Campaign Headquarters or CCHQ. The meeting started with a presentation on Campaign strategy for 2007 from the George Bridges, the Campaigns Director. This presentation gave a great insight, explaining past decisions and future ideas.

This was followed by an update on the issues surrounding the Greater London Assembly (GLA) such as the process for selecting Mayoral and GLA candidates. The update included contributions from Francis Maude MP, Angie Bray AM and Ian Sanderson (London regional director).

It is usual for these meetings to end with an example of best practice from the region. This time it was the turn of Islington Conservative Association who outlined the benefits of merging the two previous associations (North and South). This decision has allowed them to pool resources and fight campaigns more effectively.

Brick Lane Curry Night!

Saturday's Brick Lane Curry Night was a fantastic success! Approximately 20 people came along from all over London to enjoy a few drinks in the Hamilton Hall Pub on Bishopsgate, followed by a superb curry at The Standard Balti on Brick Lane.

It was also also great to see several new faces from South London and Ilford North (where we are helping to establish a new branch).

If you missed out this time, don't worry, this has become a regular occurance and there's plenty of events coming up in the near future (see right).

Boris Johnson Dinner Announced

The Upminter Dining Club has announced that their next dinner will be held on Friday 2nd March 2007. The guest speaker will Boris Johnson MP, the shadow minister for higher education and occasional host of ‘Have I Got News For You’. Mr Johnson’s speeches are always entertaining despite being gaff-prone from time to time. (Don’t mention Jamie Oliver!)

The organisers have had the good sense to grant young members a discount on the ticket price. Therefore, it will only cost £30 for the under 30's (normal ticket price £40). This includes a three course meal, table wine and an opportunity to embarrass ourselves on the dance floor afterwards!

This Dinner is taking place at the Palms Hotel, Hornchurch. The doors and open at 7.30pm and the meal will begin at 8.00pm. We foresee this event being oversubscribed so reserve our place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Havering MPs to Contest New Seat

It has been reported today that boundary changes in Havering have prompted two of our Conservative MPs to go head to head for the same seat. Hornchurch MP James Brokenshire is to challenge Upminster's Angela Watkinson for the conservative candidacy in the combined Upminster and Hornchurch constituency.

This is an unfortunate situation because both MPs have done excellent work for their different constituencies. They have also both been great backers of Havering CF by regularly attending our dinners, social events and campaign days as well as supporting our recruitment efforts!

HCF @ Any Questions?

Havering CF members attended the recording of Radio 4's 'Any Questions?' at Campion School, Hornchurch, on Friday 12th January. The panel included Dominic Grieve MP (con), Tony McNaulty MP (lab), Norman Lamb MP (lib dem) and Caroline Lucas MEP (green).

The panel discussed a wide range of topics from special needs education to the future purpose of the British armed forces. However, the most interesting and heated debate came over the latest crisis at the Home Office were Mr McNaulty is a junior minister. Jonathan Dimbleby (chairman of the programme) expertly grilled him over the crime file rows.

This was a very enjoyable evening and the HCF committee will be keeping their eyes peeled for future poltical radio and television programmes being recorded near Havering.
